Global Hospitals Group offers the country’s Largest Liver Transplantation

January 29th, 2010
The Global Hospitals Group today announced the largest comprehensive liver transplantation programme in the country providing hope for those suffering from end stage liver disease.
Global’s liver transplant program is the only program in India providing complete range of liver transplantation including cadaver and living donor transplants, split and auxiliary transplants, and our success rate is close to 90% on par with that of the best centers in the world.
Dr. Ravindranath, himself an FRCS from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, is one of the pioneers of liver transplantation in India. He had abandoned his lucrative career in some of the best hospitals in Britain and returned to India for good with a view to making liver transplants accessible and affordable to patients crippled with end-stage liver disease. Earlier, Indian patients had to go to countries like the U.K. and wait indefinitely for a cadaver donor liver and spend a fortune to undergo the procedure.
Global Group is today India’s fastest growing chain of hospitals offering tertiary-level super specialty services in a host of disciplines, and an undisputed leader in liver and pancreatic diseases and multi organ transplantation.
World-renowned liver transplant surgeon, Dr. Mohamed Rela, heads the Global Group’s liver transplantation program in India. During his 20-year-career, Dr. Mohamed Rela has performed more than 1300 liver transplants, and entered the Guinness Book of World Records by successfully carrying out liver transplantation in a 5-day-old baby. To his credit he has done largest number of liver transplant in children, split liver transplants and auxiliary transplantation.
Dr. K. Ravindranath, renowned surgical gasteroenterologist & lap surgeon and Chairman and Managing Director, Global Hospitals Group, said, “The Global Group has had the distinction of having undertaken the largest number of cadaver liver transplants in the country.”
There are ten transplant surgeons in Bangalore/Hyderabad/Chennai which is the largest team in the country supported by several hepatologists, critical care specialists and host of support specialties.
Global Hospitals in Hyderabad and Chennai have performed nearly 100 successful liver transplants. Global’s world-class services at affordable cost have drawn patients from countries like Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and the US.
Dr. N. K. Venkataramana, Vice-Chairman, BGS Global Hospitals, said, “Global has the largest liver transplantation unit in the country and the largest number of qualified liver surgeons, hepatologists, liver anesthesiologists and liver intensivists. The group has the maximum number of dedicated ICU beds with all support facilities. The transplant team comprises highly skilled and trained professionals from various disciplines – surgery, anesthesia, hepatology, critical care, interventional radiology, imaging and nuclear medicine, endoscopy, microbiology, immunology, and blood transfusion and paramedical staff.”
