Oracle Coherence Enables OpenLink to Provide High Performance, Fault Tolerant and Scalable Real-Time Views of Position Data to its Customers

Redwood Shores, Calif. – March 29, 2011

News Facts

OpenLink, a global provider of cross-asset trading, risk management and related portfolio management software solutions for the commodity, energy and financial services market segments has built an advanced grid-based energy trading platform using Oracle Coherence (www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/coherence/overview/index.html) .
OpenLink’s Active Data Services (ADS) leverages Oracle Coherence for a compute grid-based architecture that calculates and maintains risk, credit and physical position data throughout the trading day and is capable of supporting millions of rows of real-time data. The solution is designed to meet the needs of OpenLink’s largest customers, which include Shell, Vattenfall, BP, E.ON, JPMC, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse and Merrill Lynch.
ADS is also the base architecture underpinning the real time aspects of OpenLink’s position management modules, in particular Active Position Manager (APM), which provides a customizable real-time position management allowing customers to construct sophisticated real-time position views tailored to individual end user requirements.
As updates occur to the underlying data being stored in the Oracle Coherence cache, the event driven capabilities of Oracle Coherence support operations that may map to potentially millions of rows of real-time data that are delivered in second or sub-sec response time.

Uniquely, OpenLink has developed a layer above Oracle Coherence called the QueryCache to support continuous data aggregations, share common queries and pre-load common queries prior to the start of the trading day.

QueryCache enables pages to go online almost instantaneously, even if the page is complex and underpinned by millions of data items.
OpenLink has invested heavily in the ADS project since it is intended to form a key component of the OpenLink system architecture in the years to come. The project has been in development for more than two years, which matched the original timeline, and is now being adopted by OpenLink customers.

OpenLink was recognized for their innovative and sophisticated use of Oracle Coherence and received an Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Award as part of the Oracle Excellence Awards presented at Oracle OpenWorld 2010.

“The ADS/APM architecture with Oracle Coherence allows OpenLink to offer our customers flexible, dynamic, fault tolerant and real-time data warehouse-like views of OpenLink position data,” said Mike Gallagher, CTO of OpenLink. “Even more importantly, the architecture is horizontally scalable, which gives us the ability to add more servers or other system components as our requirements change. We evaluated several different approaches and our conclusion was that Oracle Coherence provides the right combination of performance, event driven architecture and extensibility to meet our needs now and into the future.”
