LONDON - Brookdale Care, one of the UK’s leading providers of residential support services for people living with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), has welcomed the publication of the NHS Information Centre’s Report Autism Spectrum Disorders in adults living in households throughout England, which draws from data gathered in the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007.

The Report, which is the first of its kind in the world, highlights the prevalence of ASD in the adult population. It was found that one in one hundred adults in England have an ASD and that the rate is substantially higher in men (at 1.8% of the adult population) than women (at 0.2%). The Report also identifies the fact that adults living with ASD are more likely to be socially disadvantaged and under-supported by services.

Critically, the Report highlights the unique challenges faced by adults with ASD in securing the support they need in order to live their lives to the fullest. In particular, the Report notes that adults living with ASD do not receive the same level of support as adults with mental disorders, because their needs are not so well recognised.

Lesa Walton, Care and Development Director of Brookdale Care, said today;

“Brookdale Care has long championed the cause of securing appropriate support for adults living with ASD. We welcome the publication of the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, which adds to the growing weight of evidence that, as a nation, we need to be doing more to support some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

“Around one in every hundred adults is living with ASD, but often their needs are simply not being met. However, there is a growing movement to ensure that recognition of ASD and appropriate diagnosis improves and the provision of suitable support is delivered. The NAS’s ‘I Exist’ Campaign and the Autism Bill progressing through Parliament are all steps in the right direction and Brookdale Care will continue to work closely with charities and private providers to push for improvements.”
