Global Twitter-Based Charity Event Returns with Local Twist

Bangkok, August 31st, 2009 - Following the success of the first global Twestival on February 12th 2009, in which 202 cities participated, Twestival returns in September with a local twist on “Twestival” – the volunteer-run, charity fundraising events for people who know each other through the micro-blogging service twitter.com. The Bangkok event will take place on the Friday the 11th of September at Frasier Suites Sukumvit raising funds for the Sangklaburi, Thailand based childrens’ homes, Baan Unrak and Baan Dada. The event merges local social and environmental causes, as organizers are also planning to offset the carbon emissions generated by the event in addition to providing funds for basic needs and education costs to the orphanages.

The first 24-hour “‘tweet-up’ with a social conscience” inspired thousands and raised $250,000 for the clean water charity, Charity: Water, and the upcoming Twestival Local event looks to be even bigger. Twestival Local again gives every city in the world the chance to hold their own Twestival, but this time they can choose their own local charity. Twitter users in Bangkok chose Baan Unrak and Baan Dada childrens’ homes, details of which you can see at www.bangkok.twestival.com.
Volunteer teams in Bangkok and cities across the world have come together to survey their communities, nominate causes, plan events, gather sponsors and raise funds. Bangkok Twestival organizer Dwight Turner said, “Twestival gives would be change makers an outlet by providing knowledge and guidance whereby they can create change in their own communities. We’re excited about Twestival in Bangkok and working with our great team of volunteers and sponsors to raise funds for these two orphanages.”
The Bangkok twitter-festival or twestival has taken the theme, “LUSH, Bangkok’s Green Night Out” and is organized in partnership with In Search of Sanuk, Green Networking Days, and the Frasier Suites Sukumvit. Global partners for Twestival include Amiando, Citrix Online, Blurb and Causecast.
