Marseille Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur, Capital of the Mediterranean Economy for a Week

MARSEILLE, France, October 19, 2011 -

Over three thousand people from some thirty countries of the Mediterranean gathered in Marseille during the six days of the Mediterranean Economic Week from 10 to 15 October 2011.

A wide range of topics including eco-cities, sustainable urban development, water and sanitation, financing tools for SME’s, the fashion industry, information technologies, very small enterprises and start-ups, interculturality and women’s role, port exchanges, the Arab spring and its impact on economic development, water governance, economic intelligence, investment opportunities, the youth and the role of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) captivated participants during this 5th Mediterranean Economic Week.

During the event that consisted of almost fifteen conferences, debates and workshops, a number of public figures such as Youssef Amrani Secretary of the Union for the Mediterranean; H.E. Taher Shahashir, Minister of the Environment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; Hazem El-Beblawi, Egypt’s Minister of Finance; Jaloul Ayed, Tunisia’s Minister of Finance; Jeannette Bougrab, French Secretary of State for Youth and Community Life; Edith Cresson, former Prime Minister; H.E. Mohamad Jaham Al Kuwari, Ambassador of Qatar in France; and Renaud Muselier, former Minister and President of the “Institut du Monde Arabe” shared their views and exchanged with participants on the future of the Mediterranean and the relations between the two shores.

And to those who may still do not know the meaning of UfM, OCEMO, UNIDO, FEMISE, MUM, AFIGEO, IME, MMMM, UCLG, MAE, JCI, FCM: we expect to see you all in Marseille next year for the 6th Mediterranean Economic Week!
