1Stop Travel Insurance Report Substantial Increases in the Sale of Extended Travel Policies

- Is the Recession Fuelling Extended Trips Abroad?

1Stop Travel Insurance has today reported a big increase in the proportion of customers taking out holiday policies for longer durations during the last year.

In September 2009, 1Stop Travel Insurance saw a 42% increase(i) in the proportion of travellers taking out policies for 35 days or more, compared to the same month last year.

Reasons for this increase are unclear but some commentators have speculated that the current economic climate could have played a significant part.

It has already been reported that many students who graduated this summer have opted to go travelling before embarking on their chosen career - with some cash-strapped employers even opting to secure this year’s brightest graduates by offering them jobs that begin after a 12-month ‘gap’.

Another trend that has emerged over the past year is for city workers who have been made redundant to opt for a career-break and go on extended travels, rather than launching straight back into an already-saturated jobseekers market.

It remains to be seen to what extent these trends will continue, especially once the UK has recovered from recession.

A spokesperson from 1Stop Travel Insurance said, “It could well be that people are just becoming more adventurous and looking to branch out further in their travels, in which case the numbers opting for extended travels abroad may continue to rise at the rates we have experienced over the past 12 months.”
