LONDON - In the second of a series of podcasts about radical career changes, Clive Sexton of Impact Executives joins Rob Grimsey and Carol Rosati of Harvey Nash, to discuss contracting and executive interim management.

Interim managers are freelance executives who are bought in for a defined period of time. Clive says, “Interim managers provide expertise and commitment, independent thought and a strong results orientation. They are highly cost-effective and in most cases self liquidating.”

The average length of assignment is 130 billable days, and around 80% are extended. Clive says, “Approximately 20% of interim managers are offered permanent roles whilst they are on assignment but few choose to go back to permanent employment.”

Executive interim management is genuinely a career choice and long-term commitment. The benefits to the individual are huge, “In mid-career when you sense you have possibly reached a plateau and want to take more control of your life, it is a serious option” says Clive. “Interim management also exposes you to a wide variety of organisations, facing many different scenarios and allows you to certainly enhance your skill set,” he continues.

However, an interim manager can experience gaps between assignments. Clive recommends having three months salary in the bank to ensure financial security between roles. The type of person who successfully makes the switch is typically mid-career, and has experience of solving major business challenges such as change management, business integration, and new business start ups.

Interim managers typically command day rates of between GBP500 - GBP3000, “The average assignment day rate is between GBP700 - GBP1200 per day but you must remember that there is no pension, car, medical benefits paid, holidays, sick days or training” says Clive.

Individuals must also be prepared to win half of their own assignments. Most people won’t find their first two assignments through interim management providers. Clive says, “In a sense it is almost like a vicious circle, that interim management firms, Impact Executives included, typically only usually employ experienced interim managers.”

Interim management can be very rewarding but is also a long-term career choice. Clive warns, “There are vast numbers of permanent candidates seeking interim management at the moment because of the decline in permanent roles, but the interim management world is also a tough world as well.”
