Secure Solution to Accelerate Translational Research and Support Personalized Clinical Trials

Redwood Shores, Calif. – March 30, 2011

News Facts

To support translational research and accelerate the development of personalized cancer care, Moffitt Cancer Center (www.moffitt.org/) , a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Cancer Center and leading translational research center, has selected Oracle Health Sciences (www.oracle.com/us/industries/health-sciences/index.htm) solutions as the foundation for its next-generation Health and Research Informatics platform.
The new informatics environment will support Moffitt’s Total Cancer Care (www.moffitt.org/Site.aspx?spid=54A14FA0FD654729A5D617402FBBACDA) ™ program by generating new intelligence from existing systems. Securely synthesizing data from numerous clinical sources, a state-of-the-art biobank, and patient-reported information, the Oracle solution will deliver rapid and accurate analysis that reveals new insight around treatment effectiveness at an individual level, helping to advance personalized medicine initiatives.
Moffitt selected Oracle® Health Sciences Enterprise Healthcare Analytics (www.oracle.com/us/industries/healthcare/058441.html) suite and Oracle Healthcare Master Person Index (www.oracle.com/us/industries/healthcare/062964.html) – along with Oracle Fusion Middleware (www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/fusion-middleware/overview/index.html) components and Oracle Database 11g (www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/overview/index.html) – to form the foundation of the new informatics solution because of its scalability and security, as well as its unparalleled analytics capabilities and data model.
By standardizing on the Oracle Healthcare Data Warehouse Foundation data model and using Oracle software, Moffitt will also gain the ability to normalize, aggregate and analyze data – ranging from molecular information to patient outcomes – from internal and external sources to identify new predictive biomarkers, treatment best practices and more effective therapies for individual patients.
Moffitt’s new informatics environment will also help it to rapidly expand the number of health systems contributing to its Total Cancer Care collection of longitudinal data and patient bio-specimens while strengthening its commitment to patient privacy and information security. Increasing the volume of data available for analysis will enable Moffitt to identify and validate targeted patient populations for cancer trials and thereby improve clinical trial efficiency and productivity.

“To implement a new paradigm of care that enables more personalized and targeted treatments, health sciences organizations require new ways to effectively capture data and meaningfully analyze and reuse it,” said Neil de Crescenzo, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Health Sciences. “Moffitt’s Total Cancer Care is an innovative initiative to accelerate personalized medicine that can be expanded and applied to many diseases. We are proud to team with Moffitt to help build the next-generation informatics environment to support this new paradigm.”
“Advances in science and technology promise to fundamentally transform the way we treat patients with cancer and other complex diseases,” said William S. Dalton, Ph.D., M.D., CEO and Center Director, Moffitt Cancer Center. “However, this transformation will only be possible through the synergy of healthcare information technology with scientific breakthroughs in the molecular understanding of disease, novel therapeutics and diagnostics, as well as a fundamental redesign of our healthcare delivery models. Leveraging longitudinal data from multiple sources and diverse populations, in particular our new wealth of outcomes information, will be essential. Oracle Health Sciences shares our vision and commitment to enabling this change through effective enterprise analytics.”
“Oracle’s solutions for health sciences, along with Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware, will enable us to surmount two fundamental health science informatics challenges – data integration and analysis – to identify predictive biomarkers that will lead to more personalized treatments for our patients,” said Mark Hulse, R.N., Vice President Information Services and Chief Information Officer, Moffitt Cancer Center. “Today’s standard electronic medical records alone will not support the research and care required to truly personalize cancer care. Oracle Enterprise Healthcare Analytics will enable us to advance our ability to aggregate clinical and genotypic data to support translational research and improve patient care.”
