STRATFORD UPON AVON, England, July 25, 2011 -

Nearly 70% of UK homemakers spend the most money on furnishing their living rooms, making it the most expensive room in your house- but not for the reasons you’d expect. Excluding fancy tech such as flat screen TVs and home cinemas, the nation is actually splurging on living room furniture such as plush settees and soft furnishings, according to a survey conducted by Juliette’s Interiors, supplier of luxury Italian and French furniture.

Less than 5% of Britons see value investing in other family spaces, such as the dining room. Does this mean that we no longer value spending time eating together as a family, or that we would rather have TV dinners in our expensively furnished living rooms?

Only 25% of us spend the most on our bedroom furniture and the boudoir becomes less and less important the older we get, with fewer than 10% of over 45-year-olds spending any money on their bedrooms, compared to approximately 40% of 18-34-year-olds. Out of this age group the 18- 24-year-olds splurge the most on their first independent bedrooms out of the family home.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, women lead the way on spending on both living and bedrooms, however nearly 4% more men than women spend money on getting guest rooms looking tip top.

With staying in being the new going out, people are investing more to make their living rooms more impressivesaid Juliette Thomas, founder of Juliette’s Interiors.
