Enhancements Improve Performance, Management and Flexibility for VDI Deployments

Redwood Shores, Calif. – July 6, 2011

News Facts

Continuing to enhance its desktop virtualization portfolio, Oracle today announced Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (www.oracle.com/us/technologies/virtualization/061153.html) (VDI) 3.3.
Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.3 features an enhanced administration portal with role based access control; introduces Oracle Linux (www.oracle.com/linux) as a supported host platform; and delivers increased performance.
Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is a complete solution for managing and accessing virtualized desktops hosted in the datacenter. Through centralizing the hosting and management of users’ desktops, Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure helps reduce administration overhead, lower total cost of ownership and increase security.

Easier Administration and Extended Platform Support

New capabilities in Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.3 include:
Improved and simplified installation that provides: a streamlined installer which allows for installation of components from one download and user interface; and a strong resilience model with hardware configurable from small to large deployments.
Enhanced management interface with role-based administration support: fine-grain administration at the desktop, company and global levels, enables delegated control. For example, this allows an IT department to easily manage multiple business units with differing needs, or a service provider to manage multiple customers within a single Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure deployment.
Increased performance: new asynchronous I/O model enables increased virtual machine performance; increased scalability that supports up to 100,000 users per VDI cluster with multiple clusters via a global catalog; new controls allow administrators to constrain virtual machines from over-using system resources; enhanced multimedia capabilities enable a complete, optimized Windows Media Player experience for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; real-time audio provides USB headset support for specific devices; and Appliance Link Protocol dynamically optimizes the audio channels to meet application demands, improving audio quality and helping to reduce network bandwidth consumption by up to 92 percent.
New platform support and availability: Oracle VDI adds support for Oracle Linux as a host /installation platform. Customers can now choose either Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris (www.oracle.com/solaris) on which to deploy Oracle VDI; guest support includes the latest Oracle Solaris, Microsoft Windows and other Linux-based operating systems such as Ubuntu 11.04; new “kiosk mode” allows for locked down, full screen applications such as Web browsers with no user accessible operating system.
Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.3 is part of Oracle’s complete desktop-to-datacenter virtualization portfolio that enables customers to efficiently and easily virtualize and manage their full software and hardware stack, from applications to disk.
Oracle’s desktop virtualization products, including Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, are certified with any Oracle Applications (www.oracle.com/us/products/applications/index.html) that are supported to run within an Internet browser environment.
