Laurent Lamothe and Former US President Bill Clinton to Co-Chair the Presidential Advisory Council for the Economic Development of Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, September 14, 2011 -

Mr. Laurent Lamothe and former US President Bill Clinton will co-chair the Presidential Advisory Council for the Economic Development and Investment in Haiti launched by Haitian President Michel Martelly on September 8, 2011.

President Martelly created this new council with Mr. Bill Clinton to help redevelop Haiti by making the country a more business-friendly place for overseas companies and investors. The 30 members of the council, including Laurent Lamothe, will act as ambassadors for the development of Haiti, spreading word that the country is open for business and eager for investment. The Council will act as a full-time liaison between potential investors and the government. It also aims to give President Martelly and Haitian lawmakers new ideas to make Haiti more attractive to investors.

As Laurent Lamothe pointed out at the Council launch ceremony, on September 8, “to build the economy, we need new ideas and new investments into Haiti. There are many development capabilities and many opportunities for investments that will stimulate the production sector to create jobs.”

Laurent Lamothe also stressed the necessity to address the current regulatory framework in Haiti: “We must consider bringing forward legislation that will facilitate the creation and implementation of businesses in Haiti. Overall, we must better position the country to compete for new market opportunities.”

Co-founder of Global Voice Group, a company specialized in services and technologies for telecommunications regulatory agencies, Mr. Lamothe is one of the most successful Haitian entrepreneurs of his generation. Appointed to the position of Special Advisor of President Michel Martelly, he also sits on the Interim Council for the Reconstruction of Haiti (CIRH).

Mr. Lamothe says he looks forward to working closely with former US President Bill Clinton and the other members of the new Council, which he describes as “an impressive group of people with a very wide range of relevant experience”. “When I was younger,” he recalls, “I competed for my country on the Davis Cup tennis courts, and I can’t tell you how proud I was at the time. But having such a great opportunity to make a difference and help my country makes me even prouder.”
