Metcash upgrades to Oracle Database 11g; Improves Performance by 300%

Oracle today announced that Metcash (www.metcash.com/index.cfm?page_id=2109) , a leading marketing and distribution company operating in the food and other fast moving consumer goods categories, has completed an upgrade to Oracle Database 11g (www.oracle.com/database/index.html) , deployed to consolidate hardware and minimise testing cycles across a database spanning thousands of products.

Improvements in Oracle Database 11g have meant Metcash can report performance improvements of “around 300 per cent” (see below) over the previous environment by allowing strutural changes to the multi-million-row database to be made in seconds instead of hours.
The performance level of Oracle Database 11g has enabled Metcash to keep more business data online. The business can now analyse several years’ data at once, which has led to increased accuracy and efficiency in reporting, measurement and forecasting.
The increased reporting capabilities and decreased reliance on archiving data have led to greater accuracy and improvements in overall supply chain effectiveness.
The company also uses Oracle Application Express rapid development tool to build applications, allowing Metcash’s 14-member data warehouse team to quickly create sales scenarios and run reports that would previously have to be outsourced to Java or HTML developers.
