TEL AVIV, Israel - Michael Cherney (Mikhail Chernoy) Foundation (MCF) (www.cherfund.org) financed the publication of three new books investigating critical issues within Israeli culture, as well as studying the contribution of the Russian-speaking community within Israeli society.
The first book, (Un)Controlled Territories - Staying or Leaving?, published by the Gesharim Publishing house, is authored by Dr. Alec D. Epstein, a historian of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
This is the first and only work that, basing its conclusions on a multitude of documents and witnesses’ testimony, provides an answer to the question: How could Israeli politicians turn a brilliant military success of the Six-Day War into a Pyrrhic victory? While containing many facts and archive materials, previously unknown, the book reads like a documentary thriller that one cannot put down.
The second publication is a second volume of the nine-volume Collected Works by Vladimir (Zeev) Jabotinsky. This is a joint project of the Jabotinsky Institute in Israel and the Kovcheg (”The Ark”) Culture and Education Center in Moscow. Unlike Jabotinsky’s fiction, this is the first time that his nonfiction is being published in a volume so comprehensive as to really give readers a comprehensive view of his work.
The third sponsored publication is The Gold of Exile: Spiritual and Cultural Integration of Russian Jews in Israel, a collection of articles also printed by Gesharim Publishers in Jerusalem and put together and edited by Moshe Kenigshtein.
The articles in the book describe various aspects of acculturation of Russian-speaking immigrants in Israel. So far, it is essentially the only book that considers the most important problems of spiritual and cultural integration of Russian Jewry in Israel.
The chief conclusion of the book is that in the twenty years that have passed since the onset of mass Russian Jewish immigration, Russian-speaking immigration has become a decisive factor of transformation and modernization of Israeli society. National self-awareness and identity has changed, as well as attitudes towards ideology, politics, education, culture, religion, and tradition.
