Oracle’s Third-Generation Sun ZFS Storage Appliances Deliver Best-in-Class Performance and Efficiency

ORACLE OPENWORLD, SAN FRANCISCO – Oct. 3, 2011

News Facts

Oracle today announced its third-generation Sun ZFS Storage Appliances (www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/storage/unified-storage/index.html) , which offer enterprise NAS functionality, and best-in-class performance, efficiency, data integrity and integration with Oracle software.
Demonstrating definitive performance leadership in the NAS market, Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage 7420 Appliance delivered 2x the performance at less than half the cost per SPC-1 IOPS of NetApp’s FAS 3270A on the SPC-1 benchmark (1).
The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 Appliance’s result of 137,066 SPC-1 input/output operations per second (IOPS) at $2.99/ SPC-1 IOPS (1) more than doubles the NetApp 3270A’s 68,035 SPC-1 IOPS at a fraction of its $7.48/ SPC-1 IOPS (2).
Oracle’s third-generation Sun ZFS Storage Appliances include significant enhancements to its industry-leading Hybrid Storage Pool technology which accelerates IOPS performance and enables customers to maintain optimal performance under heavy utilization.
With Hybrid Columnar Compression support (www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/508020) for Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances, customers using Oracle’s NAS systems to manage the lifecycle of data using in-database archiving for OLTP databases and data warehouses will be able to increase storage efficiency by 10x to 50x for most datasets, and reduce capital and operating expenses.
The only NAS product engineered together with Oracle software, the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance is integrated with Oracle Applications (www.oracle.com/applications) , Oracle Fusion Middleware (www.oracle.com/us/products/middleware/index.html) , and Oracle Database (www.oracle.com/database) , and is optimized for Oracle VM (www.oracle.com/virtualization) and the Oracle Exadata Database Machine (www.oracle.com/exadata) .

Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances Deliver Unique Features, Outstanding Performance and Customer Value

The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance product line combines an innovative architecture, breakthrough storage analytics and best-in-class management to deliver maximum value to NAS customers.
Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance storage analytics enable users to pinpoint and resolve storage bottlenecks up to twice as fast as NetApp, reducing storage administration costs by up to 36 percent, according to third-party analysis by the Edison Group, documented in “Gaining Business Advantage Through Storage Management Efficiency with Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage Appliance (www.oracle.com/webapps/dialogue/ns/dlgwelcome.jsp?p_ext=Y&p_dlg_id=10178896&src=7011671&Act=169) .”
Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances lead the industry with InfiniBand connectivity, which is 4x faster than 10 Gigabit Ethernet options from NetApp, to lower data access latencies and speed business critical operations.
In addition to capacity-optimized disk drives, Oracle’s latest Sun ZFS Storage Appliances also feature 15,000 RPM SAS-2 drives with 300GB and 600GB capacity, which accelerate non-cached reads and high-volume synchronous writes and enable customers to run both databases and applications that stream large amounts of data faster and with fewer resources.
Nearly 3,000 enterprises, including ¼ of the Fortune 100, and Oracle IT and Oracle Cloud Services, trust Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliances to support their business-critical applications.

Supporting Quotes

"Oracle's latest enhancements to its Sun ZFS Storage Appliances take them to an entirely new level in performance, efficiency and - ultimately - value," said Mark Peters, Senior Analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. "Particularly noteworthy is the Hybrid Columnar Compression support that Oracle is adding to the mix, which means these NAS solutions can significantly reduce an Oracle customer's storage footprint, CAPEX and OPEX. Customers looking for performance and cost savings should certainly consider the ZFS Storage Appliance."
“Oracle is changing the dynamics of the NAS market in a single step, giving enterprise customers a quantum leap in achievable performance and efficiency,” said John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems, Oracle. “Third generation software, third generation disk drives, and unique Oracle integration like Hybrid Columnar Compression on the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance enable Oracle storage customers to achieve business results and reduce cost at levels other NAS solutions can’t match.”
“The extreme performance in our SPC-1 results was driven by Oracle’s innovative Hybrid Storage Pool architecture and demonstrates the power of integrated hardware and software,” said Phil Bullinger, senior vice president, Storage, Oracle. “Deep integration between Oracle Solaris, ZFS and our patented automated tiering software helps eliminate performance bottlenecks and makes the ZFS Storage Appliance the clear choice for enterprise-class NAS.”
