Plans to Modernize the Java ME Platform with Submission of New Java Specification Requests and Improve Alignment with Java SE Releases

Java is the most widely deployed application platform for mobile devices.
At JavaOne 2011, Oracle outlined plans for the evolution of Java Platform, Micro Edition (www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javame/javamobile/overview/getstarted/index.html) (Java ME) through the submission of new Java Specification Requests (JSRs) to the Java Community Process (jcp.org/) (JCP).
Over the next several months, Oracle and members of the Java community will submit new JSRs for Java ME 7 and begin development within the JCP.
The first component planned for submission is an update to the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) virtual machine and library specifications to enable better alignment with Java Development Kit (JDK) 7.
This will let Java ME developers benefit from the latest Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) language enhancements and leverage consistent debugging, profiling and diagnostics across both platforms.
Oracle expects the Java ME 7 specification will enable new value-added services and deliver a smart-phone experience on feature-phones. New APIs will also be planned to extend the reach of Java ME 7 and to turn billions of connected embedded devices into application platforms.
With more than 2 billion units shipped in 2010, Java Card continues to gain momentum.
Oracle expects the newly released Java Card 3.0.4 platform will further increase Java Card technology adoption in the emerging areas of Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile payments and machine to machine (M2M) secure devices.
The release of Java Card 3.0.4 specification maintains alignment with ETSI, the main world-wide telecommunications standards body.
Oracle is showcasing Java ME and embedded Java technologies at JavaOne 2011 during 64 conference sessions and BOFs, as well as in the JavaOne Exhibition Hall.
