LONDON - Lizards Maligned by McBride Comparison

Lizards and reptiles (and their owners) throughout the UK are up in arms - after being compared to disgraced former government adviser Damian McBride by both Conservative and Labour MPs in yesterday’s Public Affairs Committee meeting at the House of Commons.

“Lizards may be known for lying around and lounging about, but they definitely don’t tell lies” says David Alderton, editor of Practical Reptile Keeping magazine. “They are also very loyal. Unlike Damien McBride, reptiles are much loved in Britain - the number of pet shops selling them more than doubled between 2005 and 2008. Their intelligence is more primitive than man’s, and this probably also means that they do not as yet use the internet or email extensively.”

Charles Walker (Con, Broxbourne) described Mr. McBride as a lizard, while Kelvin Hopkins (Lab, Luton North) referred to recent Prime Ministers feeling the need to surround themselves with reptiles. Tony Wright (Lab, Cannock Chase) was chairing the Public Affairs Committee meeting, and had hoped to question Mr. McBride - however, Mr. McBride has adopted protective colouring and gone to ground.

There are 8 million pet reptiles, amphibians and insects in the UK, outnumbering MPs by roughly 12,000 to 1… Practical Reptile Keeping caters for their owners and enthusiasts, and is available from a wide selection of news outlets.
