LONDON - Wes Gordon, a U.S. fashion designer and recent graduating student in the Womenswear program at London’s world famous Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (www.csm.arts.ac.uk/), closed the CSM BA Honors Fashion Show in dramatic style Tuesday with his ‘Glass Collection’, an uber-elegant fantasy of delicate blown glass cleverly incorporated into beautifully colored fabrics to visually stunning affect.
Gordon, the recipient of the Jenny Packham Bursary created seven outfits (www.facebook.com/pages/WES-GORDON/102977596064?sid=63d1), each featuring unique design elements crafted from glass beads and in what is no doubt a fashion first, glass that was expertly blown into a bodice, oversized collar, epaulettes, sleeves and other exquisite adornments, commissioned from London’s Glassblower Peter Layton (www.londonglassblowing.co.uk/).
Peter Layton’s Glassblowing is a hot glass studio focused on the creation and display of contemporary glass art with a particular flair for the use of color, form and texture.
“When Wes first approached me about this project I was somewhat skeptical that we could translate his vision into practical design features but, he had a strong point of view on color, form factor and importantly, how to overcome the challenge of incorporating and securing the objects to the garments. After many hours in the studio, we are all very pleased with the results,” said Peter.
Gordon, the only American student representing the CSM Womenswear program in this year’s event was a fitting choice to close the show, a position of honor previously bestowed upon such CSM alums as John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.
As the other designers viewed Gordon’s collection from monitors that were set up backstage, one participant seemed to sum up the collective relief of the group with the comment…”thank God I didn’t have to follow that.”
