ZELE, Belgium - Diamond Spring Company Zele has been working quietly on the global distribution of Belgian know-how in the mattress industry. Their latest product, Octaspring, fully composed of high polyurethane foam, provides an eco- and people friendly alternative to springs composed of metal and other materials that are currently used in the mattress industry.

Octaspring, Diamond Spring Company (DSC)’s innovative spring (patents pending worldwide) for use in mattress cores, pillows, seating furniture as well as the car industry, sparked global interest at the latest Interzum trade fair in Cologne. DSC, one of the fastest growing Belgian companies, has many years of experience in developing and producing springs and other components for the international mattress and pillow industry.
Willy Poppe, in charge of DSC Industry: “Our R&D team has been searching for the perfect PU spring for years. In the past, we’ve developed products like the Twinspring, which consists of a combination of steel and foam, and the Polyspring, known for its ventilating effect. While pressures on health and the environment continued to rise, we decided to focus our efforts on creating a full-PU spring. Until recently, this was considered technically impossible due to its weak structural support. We have, however, succeeded in developing a technological concept as well as the associated production tools to produce a spring that consists entirely of PU material, namely, the Octaspring. The name is derived from its 8-sided honeycomb-like structure that gives the spring its optimum resilience.”
Unique advantages of the Octaspring, compared to existing suspension systems, include the possibility to produce a wide range of spring resistances and heights. This enables us to mount several rows of springs of varying resistances and heights on top of each other to obtain the optimal suspension and capacity for, for example, a mattress core. Another important advantage is the perfect air-permeability of this system within a mattress core or upholstery, enabling the complete discharge of moist air. The adequacy and sustainability of Octaspring was recently confirmed and certified by the LGA research lab in Germany, who awarded the Octaspring system a maximum score for comfort and durability.
Octaspring is also unique in ecological terms. By using the Octaspring as a suspension system, we can save 30 to 40% on raw materials in comparison with current PU foam fillings, with better results. This means global savings of hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2-emissions on production of PU foam.
Patents for the Octaspring technology are worldwide pending. DSC is currently negotiating the delivery of the first test samples towards major European mattress brands who have shown a keen interest.
This fast growing company, based in Zele, Belgium, has the ambition to not only sell as many Octaspring cores within Europe, but to market the know-how internationally. Wim Poppe: “The European mattress production consists of some 50 million units per annum. Worldwide, this amounts to several multiples thereof. Due to the cost of transportation, we have to consider our choice of strategy (selling know-how or selling the product) on a geographical basis. My business unit, DSC Industry, focuses mainly on the mattress industry. By tradition, we are a manufacturing company and speak the language of our customers. Together with their R&D teams, we try to find perfect solutions. In this respect, Octaspring is of great importance.”
DSC is most likely the only company in the mattress industry nominated for the Red Dot Design Award 2010. Dany Poppe: “The fact that DSC is allowed to participate in this international product design competition and that Octaspring has been nominated, is an important achievement in the commercialization of our Belgian technology. It illustrates the innovative nature of Octaspring, and gives us the opportunity to come into contact with other market leaders in the field of product design. It instantly gives additional motivation to our team to work towards an even better and more innovative future.”
In 2005, DSC moved its offices, research, production and logistics departments to the industrial estate in Zele, where it now has a production area spanning 2ha. The company started in 1989 and is now a major European player in the development, production and distribution of mattress and pillow products. Because DSC is primarily focused on manufacturing and distribution, the company is currently less known to consumers. Yet many people find their night’s rest on a mattress or cushion component created by this dynamic Belgian family-owned business.
