WALLINGFORD, Connecticut, September 28, 2011 -

Dr. Alex D. Curtis, born in London and raised in Windsor, Berkshire, was invested as President of Choate Rosemary Hall, a college preparatory school of 850 boarding and day students located in Wallingford, Connecticut, on September 21, 2011. Special guest speaker for the occasion was education and creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson.

In his remarks, Dr. Curtis spoke about the future of education and the challenges that lie ahead. He reminded those gathered that 17th century British architect Christopher Wren faced similar challenges. “Wren understood, and was excited by, the dawning of a new age, that which was ushered in by the Scientific Revolution. We, too, face a new age, that of the Digital Revolution. We should welcome it with the same excitement that Wren would, for it will be just as significant - if not more so - than all previous industrial and scientific revolutions. It forces us to change the way we think; it demands creativity; and it requires collaboration.”

Dr. Curtis began his duties as Headmaster of Choate Rosemary Hall on July 1. He was previously Headmaster of Morristown-Beard School in New Jersey, which he led for seven years.

Dr. Curtis attended boarding school in London at St. Paul’s School, and is a graduate of Swarthmore College, where he majored in Ancient History, and minored in Art History and Latin. He studied for his doctorate at Princeton University where, in 1995, he was awarded a Ph.D. by the Department of Art and Archaeology.

During his years at Princeton, Dr. Curtis served as assistant master in Princeton’s Wilson College, Admission Officer, and Head Coach of the Women’s Rugby Club. Upon graduating he was hired as an Instructor and Head Coach at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire and then was a teacher and Director of Admission and Financial Aid at Princeton Day School before being appointed in 2004 as Headmaster of Morristown-Beard School.

He is married to Dr. Elizabeth Fecko-Curtis and is the father of two young sons.

Choate’s student population hails from 39 states and 46 countries.  Among Choate Rosemary Hall’s most notable alumni: President John F. Kennedy ‘35; Nobel Laureate Douglass C. North ‘38; Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Edward Albee ‘46; actors Michael Douglas ‘63, Glenn Close ‘65, Jamie Lee Curtis ‘76 and Paul Giamatti ‘85; and Angela Ruggiero ‘98, four-time Olympic ice hockey medalist.
