LEEDS, England - Following the implementation of fleet-wide telematics from Masternaut Three X, MITIE Group plc has won two major accolades in the 2009 Fleet Van Awards. MITIE’s Group Fleet Manager, Justin Patterson was named Van Fleet Manager of the Year - Business, while the company’s fleet took the Van Fleet of the Year title.

Organised by Fleet News and sponsored by Hitachi Capital Commercial Vehicle Services, the awards recognise hard-working fleet operators and suppliers.

MITIE and Masternaut Three X developed a unique system to give real time visibility of more than 1300 vans within the company’s business services fleet. Justin Patterson highlights the part that the Masternaut Three X web-based vehicle tracking system plays in helping the company to deliver its business services and gain its Fleet News awards.

“The Masternaut system is an invaluable tool for fleet management. It has dramatically reduced administration across the board, enabling us to achieve our ROI in less than two years,” says Patterson. “The system allows us to proactively manage many important areas of the business. For urgent service delivery, we can quickly locate our nearest available engineers onscreen and get them to site very quickly. For vehicle management, we can more easily manage vehicle servicing, enabling us to keep to manufacturers’ warranty requirements - which with a fleet of this size is extremely important.”

MITIE is benefiting from the high degree of accuracy the system provides. Each week the system generates detailed reports for each tracked vehicle. This provides information on mileage, travel, fuel usage, destinations, vehicle idling, speeding and emissions. In addition, the Masternaut GreenerFleet module gives a true picture of CO2 output for each vehicle, measured against the manufacturers’ data.

Patterson says that MITIE is keen to extend the system further and that plans are underway that will enable even tighter control of fuel usage and costs.

“We are developing a real-time fuel purchasing system. This will link our fuel card both to the point of transaction and the vehicle. This will be instantly transmitted to our fleet management system via Masternaut. This will provide an effective deterrent to fuel fraudsters,” he says.

MITIE is a leading FTSE 250 support services business, with more than 50,000 people, and revenues in excess of GBP 1.5bn. The company provides everything from strategic consultancy, to world-class delivery on the ground. This includes long-term infrastructure planning, to facilities management, property and engineering services.
