LONDON, October 31, 2011 -
New tools build upon company’s minimally-invasive Balloon Sinuplasty™ Platform to improve visualisation capabilities during sinus surgery for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis.
Millions of patients in the UK who suffer from nasal and sinus problems could be brought relief by two innovative technologies to help clear nasal blockages.
Sinusitis is the most common sinus related illness in the UK, with around nine million sufferers and is caused when the delicate membranes in the sinus become inflamed, causing a blockage.
The symptoms of sinusitis can include: pressure headaches, facial pain, nasal obstruction, toothache and fatigue.
Two new technologies, the Acclarent Cyclops™ Multi-Angle Endoscope and the Relieva Luma Sentry™ Sinus Illumination System, allow surgeons to navigate the sinus with an exceptional field of vision to check for any blockages or potential problems.
The sinuses are the air spaces behind the bones of the upper face, between the eyes and behind the forehead, nose and cheeks. The sinuses are narrow and tortuous anatomy, and even relatively minor inflammation can present a major obstacle.
Acclarent Cyclops™ Multi-Angle Endoscope and the Relieva Luma Sentry™ Sinus Illumination System allows the surgeon to directly visualise the natural opening of the sinuses, even parts which are just a few millimeters wide, and examine many angles with one scope.
The two innovations were developed by Acclarent, Inc. who also introduced Balloon Sinuplasty™, a technique in which a tiny balloon is guided into the sinuses to help clear blockages in the sinus in an effective manner.
The treatment has been hugely successful and since Balloon Sinuplasty was launched in 2005, more than 120,000 patients have been treated with the medical procedure.
