- Battery Protection IC for 1-cell Batteries Complements
Successful Precursor Series
The new battery protection IC series S-8200A from Seiko
Instruments Inc. is demonstrating that the requirement for higher
precision in the overcharge- overdischarge- and overcurrent-
supervision and lower power consumption are not necessarily a
contradiction. The pin compatibility of the SOT-23-6 and SNT-6A
packages provide exchangeability with the precursor series S-8261
and S-8211.
In the case of existing designs this circumstance is not only
increasing the safety of availability of alternative components but
is also providing an improvement of the technical parameters.
Higher precision of overcharge-detection-voltage-accuracy, +/-25mV
versus +/-35mV and overdischarge-detection-voltage-accuracy,
+/-35mV versus +/-50mV…+/-80mV for all precursor series applies for
the S-8200A. It is similarly applicable for
discharge-overcurrent-detection-voltage-accuracy +/-10mV versus
+/-15mV…+/-20mV, load-short-circuit-detection-voltage-accuracy
+/-100mV versus +/-200mV…+/-400mV and
charge-overcurrent-detection-voltage-accuracy, +/-15mV versus
formerly +/-30mV. Current consumption of 100nA in power-down-mode
is only half the requirement of the S-8211 Series. The typical
current consumption is 2.8mikroA in active mode, precursor series
needed 3.5mikroA. Specified maximum is 5.0mikroA, distinguishing
S-8200A from its precursors with 5.5mikroA…7.0mikroA. Only two
resistors, one capacitor and two N-MOS-FET power switches are the
external components needed to turn S-8200A into a reliable, precise
and energy-efficient single cell Li-Ion battery protection system.
The tiny packages, SOT-23-6 or SNT-6A of merely 1.6mmx1.8mmx0.5mm
permit extraordinary packing density and therefore enable the
integration of the protection circuitry within most of the battery
pack without own space requirement.
