KYIV, Ukraine, May 27, 2011 -
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has released its
latest annual Global Peace Index Report (GPI). According to the results of
the analytical research held in 153 countries, Ukraine has made a major leap
by going up 28 positions since last year and showed the second-largest
improvement in the region.

The expert of the Polish Institute of International Affairs Lukasz
Adamski praised Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych for his merits in
making the government more efficient, but criticized him for restriction of
political pluralism in Ukraine. The statement was released in Warsaw during a
meeting between the Gorshenin Institute (GI) experts, a Ukrainian independent
think-tank, and their Polish colleagues, reports Ukrainian news agency Levy
Bereg (Lb.ua).

Having assumed the presidency at the Council of Europe's
Committee of Ministers, Ukraine will prepare a new strategy for 2012-2015
focusing on protecting the rights of children, said the Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Ukraine, Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, speaking today at the
international conference "Combating violence against children: from
individual action to comprehensive strategies."

The Ukrainian film director Maryna Vroda received a Palme d'Or (Golden
Palm) for the best short film at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. The 15 minute
motion picture Kross (cross-country race - Ed.) is a joint project by Ukraine
and France.
