SWINDON, England - Figures released from the Ministry of Justice this week show that 32,900 couples filed for divorce in England and Wales during the first quarter of 2009, a similar figure to 2008, showing that the recession has not yet fed into an increase in the number of people filing for a divorce, despite dire predictions from the divorce industry.

However, it would seem that the recession is causing more of the UK’s divorcing couples to turn to the internet to get divorced according to figures released today by Divorce-Online.Co.Uk which provide online divorce packages from just GBP68.00.

The company, which is ten years old this year, reports an increase of 37% in new divorce cases for the first quarter of 2009, with an average of 630 divorce cases being dealt with every month by the online firm which is based in Swindon.

Mark Keenan, the founder and Managing Director of the firm says “since we launched we have seen steady growth year on year in the number of couples who feel comfortable using an online service, but the last year and a half has really seen the service take off as more and more people realise that you don’t have to pay high hourly rates to a traditional solicitor to get an uncontested divorce dealt with in a quick and professional manner”.

Divorce-Online have had to increase their staffing and office space since the beginning of the year to cope with the demand.

The firm which styles itself as the UK’s largest divorce company recently had a celebrity endorsement from BBC Radio 1’s “Comedy Dave” who recommended the service to newly separated singer and reality TV star Peter Andre live on the Chris Moyles show.
