LUCERNE, Switzerland - Switzerland’s most popular museum currently attracts more than 820,000 visitors a year and is celebrating its 50th anniversary. With the “VHS 2009″ investment project covering approximately 50 million Swiss francs, the management of the Swiss Museum of Transport launched and completed what might well be a record-breaking new building and attraction-enhancing programme with a long-term impact on both the premises and content of the museum.

On 27 June 2009, the 50th birthday of the Swiss Museum of Transport, the new two-storey Road Transport Hall with a spectacular display store, an interactive car theatre and exciting theme islands will be officially opened to the public. At the same time, the multifunctional open-air arena with a children’s traffic training area and a roadbuilding arena as well as the new documentary centre with archive and reference library will be opened. And of course the anniversary will be appropriately celebrated on this day. These are just some of the exciting attractions and events awaiting visitors of the Swiss Museum of Transport in its anniversary year!

Already since November 2008, visitors and guests have been streaming into the museum through the new FutureCom entrance building with its visually arresting facade on which some 5,000 wheels are displayed. FutureCom now offers a brand-new experience, too: the Media Factory communication exhibition, two new restaurants, the museum shop and a state-of-the-art conference centre.

Open for discoverers! More than 3,000 exhibits on some 20,000 square metres of museum space testify to a history that is, quite literally, moving, and point to the challenges of the future in the fields of transport, mobility and communication. The Swiss Museum of Transport is a hands-on experience to be savoured in all its diversity, an exciting guide to the development of transport and mobility on road and rail, on the water, in the air and in space, and to the worlds of modern communication.

Attractions that are unique to Switzerland - such as the IMAX Theatre, the Planetarium, Swissarena and the Gotthard Tunnel Show, the Hans Erni Art Museum and a lot more - make a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport an enormously exciting and memorable experience.

The Swiss Museum of Transport is a hands-on paradise for discoverers, to be savoured in all its fascinating diversity - 365 days a year!
