BASILDON, England - On 30 September 2009 local time an earthquake triggered a tsunami which hit Samoa causing extensive damage. The number of casualties and full impact remains unclear.

AA travel insurance recommends that travellers follow the FCO advice when travelling to Indonesia, Samoa, American Samoa and the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu. If you are already in one of the affected areas, you should register with the nearest consulate or high commission or online using the LOCATE portal www.locate.fco.gov.uk/locateportal.

Travellers are advised to be aware that public services and health care are likely to be disrupted in the affected areas. There is also a potential for increased risk of illness from water-borne disease.

Travellers should contact their tour operator or airline prior to travel.

There is no resident British diplomatic mission in Samoa. Routine consular matters are covered by the British High Commission in Wellington but in an emergency the British Honorary Consul can be contacted ukinnewzealand.fco.gov.uk/en/

As of 30 September 2009, the FCO advise against all but essential travel to Samoa, until further notice.
