Cyber Monday to Break UK Online Sales Records

LONDON, December 7 - Cyber Monday, the first Monday in December, signals the busiest online
shopping day of the year, as shoppers who see goods on the high street over
the weekend use their office high-speed connections to place orders online
once they return to work. Online shoppers are expected to spend between 350M
to 400M GBP on Christmas gifts on Cyber Monday. David Smith, director of
operations at IMRG, the industry body for online retailers says, "It's the
biggest day in terms of sales - the first Monday in December is the big day
as most people have been paid."

Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis concurs, "Everyone decides
what they are going to buy over the weekend then goes to work on Monday, gets
on the computer and makes their purchases." Likewise, Amazon, who has been
gearing up for Cyber Monday for weeks, is anticipating its busiest Christmas
on record with sales expected to increase by up to 35%. Brian McBride, chief
executive of Amazon UK, said, "We expect this to be our biggest Christmas to
date". Meanwhile, Tesco will go head-to-head against Marks & Spencer and
Waitrose by offering heavy discounts on its finest range of foods and luxury
items starting on Cyber Monday.
