MiX Telematics promotes its consumer safety and security services under the ‘Matrix’ brand, and fleet management services under the ‘VDO Fleet Manager (FM)’ brand. The company offers four packages under the ‘Matrix’ brand and five packages under the ‘Fleet Manager’ brand, enabling customers to make smart and easy decisions while selecting the service.
“MiX Telematics has exhibited business dexterity and acumen in service packaging, making it the ideal service provider to fleets of all sizes that cater to different industry verticals including oil and gas, transportation and construction,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Karthik Elamvaluthi. “Strategic partnerships with technology leaders such as Continental, Microsoft, Garmin and Wavecom have enabled the company to continuously upgrade existing products and introduce new ones, while constantly enhancing value to customers.”
This is demonstrated as MiX Telematics is looking forward to unlocking the fleet management capabilities of its new tachograph data collection system, the ‘VDO DLD’, developed for Continental, by launching a European market focused system in early 2009. This will leverage both Continental’s expertise in European legislation and Wavecom’s communication expertise, while allowing MiX Telematics to expand its European footprint.
“In May 2007, MiX Telematics acquired the distribution rights of ‘Fleet Manager’ from Siemens VDO and purchased Siemens VDO’s UK-based fleet management and commercial vehicle outfitting businesses, including Datatrak product range and network,” adds Elamvaluthi. “This strengthened the company’s distribution and product line, giving it a true global status.”
Also indicative of MiX Telematics’ efforts to upgrade its products and services to keep abreast of changing customer needs is the ‘FM Navigator’. This high-end fleet management package (on an enhanced hardware platform) was launched in September 2008 in collaboration with Garmin navigation and has strengthened MiX Telematics’ product line. More recently in November 2008, the company added RIBAS Display to its fleet management system, a device that warns drivers of excessive speed, acceleration, harsh braking, excessive idling and revving.
“The ability to extend enhanced functionalities on a standard hardware and provide complex integrated business information has enabled MiX Telematics to strategically position its products in this market,” remarks Elamvaluthi. “Moreover, the unique packaging and competitive pricing has enabled it to attract a wide range of customers irrespective of their fleet size or vertical to which they cater.”
Currently, MiX Telematics’ range of products and services is sold across more than 75 countries, with an installed base of approximately 500,000 units across the globe. In Europe, the company has approximately 120,000 units installed.
The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Line Strategy is presented each year to a company that has demonstrated the most insight into customer needs and product demands. The recipient company should have optimised its product line by leveraging products with the various price, performance, and feature points required by the market.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
