The Mercedes-Benz Championship, the most recent destination on the European Tour, provided the latest backdrop for Genworth Financial’s Putts for Charity(R) initiative generating EUR29,636 for SOS Children’s Villages.

The program, run in conjunction with the Tour Player’s Foundation, took place for the duration of the tournament, adding to the EUR330,000 donated to date since Putts for Charity(R) launched in 2007. For every one putt made by the Tour Professionals on course, the Genworth Foundation donated EUR2 and for every one putt made by visitors to Genworth’s putting green, EUR1 was donated.

European Tour Players including Germany’s Alex Cejka, Ireland’s Paul McGinley and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson also joined in the fundraising fun by joining tournament spectators in the tented village and sinking their own, EUR5,000 one putts.

“It’s great to bring Putts for Charity(R) back to Germany in Genworth Financial’s role as a European Tour sponsor and on this occasion, donating money to SOS Children’s Villages” said Martin Ring, a director of the Genworth Foundation. “They are a very worthy beneficiary doing some great work as they help needy children around the world. We’ve seen some fine putting here at the Mercedes-Benz Championship adding to that all important, fundraising total.”

Peter Weichmann from SOS Children’s Villages added: “Genworth Financial will be taking Putts for Charity to 5 different destinations on the European Tour schedule in 2009. It not only raises vital money for SOS Children’s Villages but the initiative also provides important publicity for our charity. We look forward to linking up with Genworth next at the Madrid Masters in October and keeping the fundraising momentum going.”
