Hamburg Climate Week: European Green Capital Welcomes Hundreds of Thousands of Visitors at Europe’s Biggest Climate Event

Sustainability, climate protection and climate research will be in the focus of attention at the 3rd Climate-Week, taking place from 23 to 30 September in Hamburg. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are due to attend, making this Europe’s biggest climate event. More than 120 stakeholders from politics, science, business and culture will participate in talks, exhibitions, screenings and concerts. The Hamburg metropolitan area will present itself as an international hotspot for climate research and renewable energy. Moreover, Hamburg’s “Train of Ideas” can be viewed again as of 29 September, after completing its journey through Europe.

Numerous partner organisations will participate in the Climate-Week, among them UNEP, the United Nation’s environmental programme, as well as Deutsche Bahn. “In a unique way, Hamburg is bringing climate researchers, politicians, economists and financial experts together to jointly develop solutions for the impact of climate change,” says Frank Schweikert, the organiser. “At the same time we would like to communicate the challenges that evolve from global climate change and raise awareness among a larger audience.”

The programme will be kicked off by the Hamburg Climate-Night on Friday, during which renowned scientists will present their research expeditions to the audience. Other highlights include an interactive theme park and the unique “Circular Pavilion”, situated beside the “Europa-Passage” event location.

Hamburg, European Green Capital 2011, will also showcase its “Train of Ideas”, which has returned from its journey through 17 European cities and can be viewed from 29 September to 20 October. With its mobile exhibition “Visions for future cities”, Hamburg presents more than 100 projects in the field of sustainable urban living.

The title of “European Green Capital 2011″ has been primarily bestowed to Hamburg due to its climate protection scheme. As a growing port and industrial hub, Hamburg has managed to cut CO2 emissions by 15 percent since 1990. Until 2020, emissions are planned to be reduced by 40 percent, and by 2050 even further to 80 percent. (www.hamburggreencapital.eu)
