Hannover Festival Production "Semele Walk" Featuring Westwood Couture Goes on Tour

After 24 days and over 30 events the 2nd KunstFestSpiele
Herrenhausen in Hannover came to an end on 19th June 2011. The
festival opened on 27^th May with the musical performance
“Semele Walk” - about which the London Financial Times wrote:
“With Semele Walk, Hannover’s youngest festival brings punk to
Handel in the 320-year-old gallery of one of Europe’s
finest palace gardens. Westwood has provided the
costumes-a dizzying array of them, from slashed
grunge to glittering rococo.” After its hugely successful
premiere in Hannover this play, which owes a debt to Handel’s
oratorio, but features modern costumes by Vivienne Westwood, is due
to tour to Amsterdam for the Holland Festival in 2012 and then to
Australia for the Sydney Festival in 2013. Preparations are also
underway for a guest performance in London.

With a mix of old and new music, musical theatre, art
installations, performances and film concerts, director Elisabeth
Schweeger has succeeded again this year in putting together an
extraordinary and varied programme of works specifically designed
for the Hannover event and has further raised the profile of this
still relatively new festival. In choosing the theme “Worlds
Unleashed”, Schweeger has tapped into the spirit of the age in
which we live. In all, over 56 international artists from 17
countries (including Argentina, Japan, Greece, Mexico, the
Netherlands, Austria, England, Poland, the USA and Hungary) were
invited to take part in the festival. The response to this second
arts festival has been extremely positive with a total of over
8,000 visitors enjoying the 30 performances staged in the
Herrenhausen Gardens. In total  77% of tickets were sold.

The next KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen will take place in June
2012 in the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover.
