CASTELLINA, Italy - With its Supertuscan Trasgaia 2006, the Tuscan winery Villa Trasqua has once again scooped the Gold title. At the International Wine and Spirit Competition (ISWC) 2009 in London, Villa Trasqua won the prestigious ‘Gold Best in Class’ title for the second time in a row, a first in the world of wine. ‘Tenuta’ Villa Trasqua can be recognised by the large ‘T’ on the label.
Following on from its overall champion awards at the American Express Tower Club Wine Awards 2009 in Singapore, Villa Trasqua won again. The purpose of the ISWC in London is to promote the quality of the world’s best wines. Villa Trasqua, about 120 hectares, is located a few kilometres outside Siena in Castellina in Chianti, the best part of the Chianti Classico region. Wine has been produced on the estate since 1968, while the vineyard has been in the hands of Dutch wine-lover Hans Hulsbergen since late 2001. Amongst other things, Hulsbergen has arranged for a complete re-planting of vines and invested heavily in new vats and casks and a fully automated grape press. He also took on Swiss winemaker Andreas Stössel. Stössel works closely with the renowned Dr Stefano Chioccioli, who acts as wine-making consultant for Villa Trasqua. These wine makers scored 94 and 100 Parker points for their wines, which is unique for Italian wines.
Umbrella
The estate is located on the Trasqua hill, a scorching patch with various kinds of poor soil - stony, sandy with some clay, lime, loam and ferriferous. Villa Trasqua now covers around 55 hectares of vineyards. Nearly all the vines - around 95% - are south-facing. This is “a must if you are to produce high-quality wines,” Stössel explains. Alongside the composition of the soil, the local microclimate plays a major role in the quality of the wines produced. “The Trasqua hill is also known as ‘the umbrella of the Chianti Classico’ - if it rains in and behind the surrounding hills, it usually stays dry on and around the vineyard. Villa Trasqua is also located on a plateau where there is always a light breeze blowing. That means that the grapes are kept nice and healthy and the temperature stays pleasant.”
