Company will continue to develop safer plastics free of estrogenic activity
AUSTIN, Texas, November 10 - PlastiPure announced today that it received a US$1.1 million grant from
the National Institute of Environmental Health and Safety (NIEHS) to continue
development and commercialization of plastics that do not leach chemicals
with harmful estrogenic activity (EA). PlastiPure will use these federal
funds to expand its line of innovative materials and products that are free
from EA (EA-Free(TM)).
"This NIEHS funding validates our innovative technology and will allow us
to expand our development of PlastiPure-Safe(TM) materials and EA-Free(TM)
products," said Mike Usey, PlastiPure CEO. "Consumers want the safest, most
sustainable and versatile goods possible. PlastiPure's EA-Free(TM) certified
products are vastly superior to current market solutions that use BPA-free
plastics, glass, or metal materials, providing families with healthy, green,
and convenient solutions."
In addition to the estrogenic chemicals BPA and phthalates, hundreds of
other chemicals having EA are used in plastics manufacturing. Health issues
associated with EA include birth defects, reproductive cancers and behavioral
and learning disorders.
Recently, PlastiPure has successfully introduced PlastiPure-Safe(TM)
resins (Topas(R) COC PlastiPure-grades) and certified EA-Free(TM) products
(Hydrapak Purebot(TM) water bottle). PlastiPure co-developed the Purebot with
Hydrapak's hydration specialists resulting in a unique bottle with all the
advantages of modern plastics but without the associated health risks of EA.
PlastiPure will be launching additional EA-Free(TM) products such as baby
bottles, food storage containers and multilayered bags.
"Our extensive research has enabled us to identify and replace hundreds
of chemicals that contain EA without significantly impacting material
properties, processing methods, or tooling," said Usey. "This allows
PlastiPure to produce EA-Free(TM) products at competitive costs."
PlastiPure will also use the grant funding to develop, or improve through
its partners, several additional colorants, clarifiers, antistatic agents and
antioxidants that could be incorporated with resins to continue expanding its
line of safer plastics.
Hydrapak's Purebot(TM) is available for US$9.99 at
www.pure-bot.com/ and at retail outlets that carry fitness products.
