ResMed (NYSE: RMD), a leading developer, manufacturer, and distributor of sleep and respiratory medical equipment, recently announced the acquisition of Gründler, a high-end humidification developer and longtime ResMed supplier. Including Gründler’s humidification technology in the ResMed family marks a further step in providing solutions to sufferers of sleep and respiratory disorders. ResMed will be launching the newest generation of the established Humicare™ line at the European Respiratory Society this September.

Many medical applications require the heating and humidification of medical gas, and the appropriate level of humidification is crucial in achieving maximum treatment efficiency. Continuous positive airway pressure therapy, for example, is the most effective non-invasive treatment for sleep apnoea and several other respiratory disorders. Yet, a patient’s ability to comply may be affected by potential negative side effects, such as noise from the device, nasal dryness/congestion and breathing discomfort.

ResMed has launched several innovations and improvements to its devices to combat these side effects. The improved features of the S9™ series include reduced noise, a more comfortable Easy-Breathe waveform, and an improved humidification system.

By acquiring Gründler, ResMed confirms its commitment to increase patients’ ability to adhere to respiratory therapy, especially for invasive ventilation, in which heating and humidifying respiratory gas is particularly important. Excellent high- quality solutions are vital to ensure successful treatment and improve patients’ quality of life.

“Gründler has been a supplier to ResMed for several years. With Gründler’s products and technology, ResMed can confidently recommend a humidifier/ventilator system with innovative research and development combined with quality manufacturing,” said Geoff Neilson, president, Respiratory Care strategic business unit at ResMed. “This is a very important step towards making ResMed a total solutions provider for those who suffer from sleep or respiratory disorders.”

Unlike other solutions on the market, Gründler’s products have one heater with several chambers. This allows clinicians to choose a chamber uniquely suited to different patient and care settings, with one unified heater. This ability to adapt to each patient’s needs is consistent with ResMed’s other products. The humidifiers run the range from neonatal and pediatric to non-invasive pressure support to intensive care, offering a solution for every patient.

“We are extremely pleased to join forces with such a fast-growing and dynamic company,” said Markus Gründler, former managing director of Gründler, who now serves as the director, production and research and development in ResMed’s respiratory care business unit. “Most importantly, this gives us an opportunity to reach and help more patients with our solutions.”
