Rybka Shortlisted for ACE Engineering Excellence Award

EDINBURGH, Scotland - The Board of Directors at Rybka are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for an ACE Engineering Excellence Award in the Building Services (Small Firm) Category for our involvement in the Dumfries & Galloway Leisure Centre.

This new build leisure complex incorporates a mix of energy efficient design solutions resulting in a commercially successful development comprising a new multifunctional sports and leisure facility.

This development presented a number of design challenges. The building type presented significant energy demands and the Clients brief called for low maintenance and life cycle costs had to be carefully considered. Rybka conducted detailed thermal simulation studies which helped determine the buildings heat losses and heat gains. Dynamic analysis was conducted which indicated the running costs and whole life costs of the building when various installations were employed. This helped determine the feasibility of various installation options and enabled the selection of the most appropriate mix of solutions to meet the clients brief.

As a result of this extensive evaluation process, low energy and renewable energy systems employed include desiccant dehumidification systems, optimised heat recovery incorporated in air handling plant, solar thermal water heating, combined heat and power generation, low energy lighting, sophisticated lighting and ventilation control systems and the re-use of stored rainwater. The combination of these systems contributes to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the development.

The engineering elements within the building provide a highly visible and tangible example of the low energy results that can be achieved when renewable and sustainable technologies are applied appropriately. This flagship low energy leisure centre provides education and inspiration to the visiting public.

Rybka are the only Scottish Company to be shortlisted in the Building Services Section of the Awards. The awards ceremony will take place during the ACE Gala Dinner at the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel, London on May 13th, 2009.
