LONDON - Meeting the unparalleled security challenges facing London and other cities that host major events will be discussed by leading experts at a conference in London next week. Entitled ‘Secure London’, the conference concentrates on the tried and tested critical elements that organisers need to incorporate in their planning.

Steve Cooper, Head of Security, Olympic Delivery Authority, will be giving the keynote address on day 1 of the event that takes place at London’s Tower Guoman Hotel on 28 and 29 October 2009. Richard Barnes, Deputy Mayor of London, will give the welcoming address.

Delegates will also hear a presentation from Narinder Nayar, Chairman of ‘Bombay First’ who will speak on how the lessons of last November’s terrorist attacks are being applied to make Mumbai a safer city. Istanbul is another city to have suffered and the 2003 bombings will be discussed in a paper delivered by Mark McCombe, HSBC Global Asset Management.

In the past hostage taking has blighted major sporting events. Techniques for dealing with the ever present threat will be discussed by Lina Kolesnikova, a leading authority on counter-terrorism and homeland security, while with the Hillsborough disaster back in the news, Prof G Keith Still, Chief Technical Officer, Crowd Dynamics Ltd will speak on understanding crowd dynamics.

‘The coming storm - security and environmental change’ is the chilling title of a presentation to be given by Cleo Paskal, Associate Fellow, Chatham House, while Claire Seed, Deputy Head of the London Resilience Team, Government Office for London, will speak on ‘Planning for mass evacuation - the London experience’.
