OTTAWA, Canada - Strong Demand for Ku-Band Coverage of Africa and the Atlantic Ocean
Region Builds Growing Utilization of Telesat’s Newest Satellite
Telesat, the world’s fourth-largest fixed satellite service operator,
announced today that it has begun commercial service on its state-of-the-art
Telstar 11N satellite. Telstar 11N is located at 37.5 degrees West and
utilizes 39 high powered Ku-band transponders to support a wide range of
video and data applications in North America, Europe and Africa and across
the Atlantic Ocean.
“The entry into service of Telstar 11N is an important achievement that
will drive Telesat’s growth in international markets for years to come,” said
Dan Goldberg, President and CEO of Telesat. “This is a new satellite in a
highly desirable orbital location that enables Telstar 11N to provide full
coverage of prime Atlantic shipping routes while connecting three continents.
Telstar 11N is a promising and timely addition to our global satellite
fleet.”
As previously announced, Telstar 11N is the first satellite to provide
Ku-band coverage of the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic Circle to the equator.
Commercial and government customers in shipping and aviation are seeking this
capability to deploy cost-effective, full time mobile broadband solutions
using very small aperture terminals or VSATs. The satellite’s African
coverage is promoting the implementation of broadband and video services
across the continent and enabling a broad range of users to seamlessly
connect their African operations with Europe and North America.
Telstar 11N was manufactured by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) and Sea Launch
provided mission management with its Land Launch partner, Space International
Services Ltd. Telesat’s newest satellite uses SS/L’s proven 1300 platform,
has a solar array span of 31 meters and an expected 15 year mission life.
