Membership reaches 68 as organisation readies for global commercial launch
LONDON, February 9, 2011 - The Wholesale Applications Community (WAC), an alliance of
telecommunications companies committed to building an open applications
platform, today announced that 10 additional organisations from across the
mobile ecosystem have joined the initiative, taking membership levels to 68
companies in the lead up to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Adobe, Amdocs, Eyeline, HP, IBM, Minigate, Neustar, Panasonic, SAP and
SanDisk have all joined WAC, enabling them to access the materials and
support required to launch WAC products. Each company will bring its own
unique level of expertise that will support WAC in providing solutions that
will accelerate and expand the market for applications and provide greater
choice for consumers.
"We continue to attract a healthy pipeline of members from across the
mobile industry, as evidenced by companies such as HP, IBM and SAP joining
the programme," said Peters Suh, CEO, WAC. "In Barcelona, we will be
revealing much more in terms of WAC's momentum, with WAC-enabled application
stores and fully functional WAC devices supporting the latest applications."
WAC Press Conference at Mobile World Congress
WAC will be holding a press conference on Monday 14th February at 14:00
in Hall 5, Room 3 to detail the commercial launch of the organisation,
supported by CEOs from a number of member organisations. The press conference
is open to press and analysts attending Mobile World Congress.
About the Wholesale Applications Community
Launched in February 2010, the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) is
an open global alliance formed from leading organisations within the telecoms
sector. Uniting a fragmented applications marketplace, WAC will create an
open industry platform that benefits the entire ecosystem, including
applications developers, handset manufacturers, OS owners, network operators
and end users.
The Wholesale Applications Community will: -- Accelerate and expand the market for applications - Simplify application development by giving developers the opportunity to write applications that can be deployed across multiple platforms and multiple operators, and address a potential global market of more than 3 billion users. -- Create more compelling applications - Enable developers to utilise both device and network capabilities to create the next generation of applications. -- Provide greater choice for users - Enable portability of applications across devices, operating systems and network operators.
