DALLAS - Modernize COBOL and Natural Applications to C# and Java

ATERAS, a leading provider of solutions for legacy migration and modernization, announced today the general release of eavRPM(TM) (for Rapid Program Modernization). Mainframe analysts and developers can create customized, high-powered and well-documented applications in C# or Java from either COBOL or Natural without knowing any C# or Java.

eavRPM was designed to simplify the modernization process, empowering the existing mainframe programming staff to create modern .NET and Java applications via an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The tool uses the existing mainframe applications as both the specifications and the code foundation for creation of new web applications. In fact, eavRPM users only need to know how the application works and have a general knowledge about the current COBOL or Natural language. That’s because eavRPM allows capture of mainframe screens and lines of COBOL or Natural code, and provides the mechanism to quickly and simply paste the screens and desired business rules into the new web applications. In a matter of a few hours, a COBOL or Natural developer can complete a C# or Java web site that prototypes the processing of an entire mainframe application.

The results are web applications that are based on the existing mainframe applications’ functionality, business rules and flow, but that are very native to the robust and stateless nature of the web and that process data stored in Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or DB2. The resulting .NET applications take full advantage of the Microsoft software stack (Windows, Visual Studio, Internet Information Services (IIS), Team Foundation Server, etc.) and exploit the nature of object-oriented applications through the use of HTML, AJAX, ASPX, ADO.NET and C#. The resulting Java applications take full advantage of the Java language and the advanced features in JSP/Struts, AJAX, Tomcat/JBoss and Hibernate/ JDBC. Because eavRPM generates native C# and Java solutions, all applications are delivered directly from eavRPM to either Visual Studio or to your Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Functional changes are easily applied through eavRPM, including the addition of literals, pull-downs, checkboxes, radio buttons, gridviews, graphics, or logos to any page or field. Existing mainframe screens can be easily split or combined with one another to change and update the look and feel of the resulting applications. New web applications are developed quickly, without the need to re-staff or to spend months developing specifications for the new applications. The ATERAS eavRPM solution includes no system-level software, no “black box” processing and no perpetuation of mainframe commands. Once the new application has been released to production, no additional ATERAS license fees are required because all future maintenance is done using Visual Studio or any of the Java IDEs.

“eavRPM was designed to simplify the modernization process while reducing the time and cost of the effort. This tool empowers your existing programming staff to create modern, web-savvy applications using an intuitive graphical user interface that leverages the mainframe legacy application,” said Scott Miller, CEO/President, ATERAS.
