PHILADELPHIA - Dr. Walsh is the Primary Editor of Palliative Medicine, a new Clinical Reference Published by Elsevier
Elsevier, the world’s leading publisher of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, congratulates Declan Walsh, MSc, FACP, FRCP (Edin) on receiving the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s 2009 Project on Death in America (PDIA) Palliative Medicine National Leadership Award (www.aahpm.org/membership/awards.html) at the AAHPM 2009 Annual Assembly on March 26.
This award recognizes a physician leader who has advanced the field of palliative care by the education of the next generation of palliative care leaders. The award program promotes the visibility and prestige of physicians in both academic and clinical settings who are committed to mentoring future leaders and serving as role models for other health professionals engaged in improving the care of the dying. The award was bestowed upon Dr. Walsh in recognition of his significant lifetime contribution to the field of palliative medicine.
Dr. Walsh established the Palliative Medicine program at the Cleveland Clinic in 1988 - the first such program in the United States. It still remains one of the few fully integrated programs in the U.S., and in 1991 it was designated a national and international demonstration project by the World Health Organization. In 1989, the first fellowship program in Palliative Medicine in the United States was established under Dr. Walsh with support of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In 1996 an endowed Chair of Palliative Medicine was created at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Walsh as the first incumbent - the first such endowed Chair in the United States. Dr. Walsh is a founding member of both the European Association of Palliative Care and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Walsh is also the primary editor of Palliative Medicine (www.us.elsevierhealth.com/isbn/9780323040211/Palliative-Medicine), a new clinical reference published by Elsevier that is designed to help physicians provide effective palliative care to patients. Dr. Walsh said, “In 2008 palliative medicine was recognized for the first time as an official specialty in the United States. It is a fast-growing, rewarding, and challenging field, which is also developing rapidly internationally. Practitioners in this field need specific, useful resources to treat their patients effectively.”
