Fraport Traffic Figures - September 2009: September Results Confirm Forecast for 2009

FRANKFURT - Fraport AG served 4.6 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home-base hub in September 2009, down 4.7 percent year-on-year. “The September passenger figures confirm our 2009 full-year forecast of only a five to six percent drop in passenger traffic at Frankfurt,” explained Fraport executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte. In particular, intercontinental traffic has developed over proportionately well again and is increasingly influencing the positive development of traffic figures.
In the first nine months of 2009 Fraport welcomed a total of about 38.6 million passengers at FRA. This represents a 6.1 percent decline from the comparable period last year. “Looking at the big picture, the decline in passenger traffic is shrinking month by month,” commented Schulte. “Following a drop of more than 13 percent at the beginning of the year, this is indeed an overall positive development - the recovery process has taken off.” Third-quarter passenger figures are a good example here: A total of about 14.8 million passengers were recorded, only 2.8 percent fewer than in the third quarter of 2008.
Aircraft movements at Frankfurt Airport decreased by 4.7 percent in September 2009 to 40,150 takeoffs and landings. For the first nine months of the year Fraport registered 348,119 takeoffs and landings at FRA (down 5.5 percent). September 2009’s cargo throughput at
FRA saw 161,234 metric tons of airfreight (down 5.4 percent) and 5,978 metric tons of airmail (down 16.2 percent) handled. In the first three quarters of 2009 FRA recorded about 1.3 million metric tons of airfreight (down 16.6 percent) and 56,476 metric tons of airmail (down 14.3 percent).
Maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) fell in September 2009 by 5.3 percent year-on-year to approximately 2.3 million metric tons - pushing the total annual tonnage to date (January to September) to about 20.4 million metric tons (down 5.2 percent).
At Fraport’s majority-owned airports, Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru recorded 6,502,094 passengers in the first nine months of 2009 - a five percent jump year-on-year. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera welcomed 7,535,983 passengers, up 1.3 percent. On Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, Burgas Airport (BOJ) served 1,664,551 passengers (down 12 percent) and Varna Airport (VAR) received 1,122,002 passengers (down 16.2 percent).
The Group airports served a total of 55,381,837 passengers from January to September 2009, a 4.4 percent decline year-on-year.
