HAMBURG, Germany, October 10, 2011 -

The impact of climate change can be felt everywhere: sea levels are rising and regional extreme weather and flooding incidents are becoming more frequent, threatening the habitat of humans and animals. These issues will be the focus of the “acqua alta 2011,” an exhibition and international conference on climate impact, flood protection and hydraulic engineering, taking place from 11 to 13 October in Hamburg. At this unique event, high-ranking decision makers from business, science and politics are gathering to discuss viable strategies for the future.

For three days, more than 70 speakers from 13 countries will present research findings and discuss regional and global adaptation strategies. At the exhibition, approximately 70 specialised companies from seven countries will showcase their products, technologies and services in flood and coastal protection, risk and disaster management, as well as hydraulic engineering.

This year, Hamburg offers a special framework for the event, as the European Commission bestowed the title “European Green Capital 2011″ on Hamburg to acknowledge the city’s commitment to environmental protection. As a constantly growing port and industrial hub, the city has managed to cut CO2 emissions by 15 percent since 1990. Until 2020, emissions are planned to be reduced by 40 percent, and by 2050 even further to 80 percent. Measures to achieve this goal include sustainable business and construction, eco-friendly traffic, nature conservation and sustainable consumption.
