COPENHAGEN - This year’s Archery World Cup Final has just been completed. With arrows flying over the historic canal, Nyhavn was the backdrop for one of this year’s most spectacular sporting events in Copenhagen. A few days before the Olympic Session and Congress (IOC), Tom Dielen, secretary general, International Archery Federation concludes that Copenhagen has great potential for hosting major international sporting events.

From the world’s 16 best archers representing 12 nations, Ye-Ji Kwak won the women’s recurve and Luzmary Guedez ran away with the title in compound. In the men’s recurve, Marco Galiazzo became world champion, as did Sergio Pagni in compound.

The winners and the International Archery Federation were not only pleased with their own efforts but they were also pleased with the host’s efforts.

- When Copenhagen presented the set-up for the Archery World Cup Final in Nyhavn we were very impressed.A fantastic venue in a great historic location and a team of professionals to handle the event. It was hard to imagine that an event as complex as ours could be delivered in the centre of a capitol city. But Copenhagen offered the perfect conditions for us. The city has great potential for major international sports events, says Tom Dielen, Secretary General, International Archery Federation. Copenhagen sets it sight on sport - The Archery World Cup final was one of the most spectacular events to take place in Copenhagen during the Year of Sports 2009 and we are ready to stage future events in other historic venues. When it comes to organizing major events, the city is open for creative solutions to showcase sport to the public and the world, says Lars Vallentin Christensen, Business Development Manager, Wonderful Copenhagen.

It has just been made public that Denmark is number 12 on a global list of leading sports-events-nation. Sports Cities and Nations Guide 2009 who also give out Sportcal, a leading international sports media, prepared the list. Denmark is in the same pool as Australia, USA and France but is ranked below Germany, China and England.

The reason that Denmark is now part of the exclusive club is that 2009 has been officially named the Year of Sports in Denmark and that Sport Event Denmark is backing the large international events on Danish soil in 2009 and beyond. Sportcal raise the awareness among Copenhageners of events like the Archery World Cup Final, World Championship in Taekwondo and last by not least, the IOC’s Session and Olympic Congress.
