The Internet's Original Travel Deals Publisher Grows 66% in Europe Over 12 Months
LONDON, January 11 - Travelzoo Inc. (NASDAQ: TZOO), a global Internet media company, announced
today that 2009 brought a record number of new subscribers to its European
travel and entertainment publications. The number of subscribers in
Travelzoo's four European markets - France, Germany, Spain and the UK -
topped 3.6 million by the end of 2009. The additional 1,380,766 subscribers
in Europe was the largest annual increase for Travelzoo's European subscriber
base since European operations began in May 2005.
Chris Loughlin, Managing Director Travelzoo, Europe said, "2009 was a
remarkable year for Travelzoo's European publications in terms of subscriber
growth. The economic downturn spurred more travellers than ever to turn to
Travelzoo to help find the perfect deal. We saw more referrals from existing
subscribers than in any other year in our history. Our clean, honest,
no-frills approach to recommending outstanding travel and entertainment
deals, that are really available, is market agnostic. Travellers across the
world simply want the facts on how they can get the best deal, that's what we
do".
Hilton Hotels 'The January Sale - 50% off all weekends in
2010', which was launched on 26 December 2009, was the most popular deal of
2009 among Travelzoo's European subscribers. Danny Barrasso, Director, Online
Marketing and Retailing at Hilton said, "This is the second year in a row we
have launched the Hilton Sale with Travelzoo, this year we saw over 270,000
clicks, up from 170,000 last year. Travelzoo's reach and flexibility is
extremely attractive to us, they help us communicate big messages to three
and a half million travellers, who trust them. Their continued investment in
their European audience and production process is evident in these results."
During the 12 months ending 31 December, Travelzoo's European subscribers
clicked 74 million times for travel and entertainment offers, up from 46
million in 2008. Travelzoo's European team of editors published a record
number of travel and entertainment deals, 90,368 deals compared to 63,124 at
the end of 2008.
Test booking deals is an essential element of Travelzoo's unique
selection and recommendation process. In 2009 Travelzoo's multi-lingual team
of testers at the TÜV SÜD certified Travelzoo Test Booking Center(R) in
Munich identified 18,263 bugs or errors on European travel websites when
researching offers. The most common error found on travel sites across Europe
was that the price offered on a travel company's landing page was not
available on the dates offered. Travelzoo will only recommend deals that are
truly available at the price advertised, this is integral to maintaining
trust with Travelzoo's growing subscriber base.
