LONDON -
The 2009 Frost & Sullivan European Care Management Systems Industry Innovation and Advancement Award is presented to Anoto Group AB (Anoto) for pioneering the first commercial Digital Pen and Paper (DPP) technology. This innovative technology has already begun to carve a niche for itself in the field of healthcare electronic data capture workflow.

Digital pen and paper works almost like a normal pen and paper, thereby facilitating change management. It enables fast and reliable transmission of handwritten text into a digital format. In the healthcare space this technology is increasingly being deployed within home and social care, emergency care and hospital environments.
Over the years this technology has been adopted by several leading IT vendors around the world. Low implementation and maintenance costs as well as user friendliness have supported the strong entry of Anoto’s Digital Pen and Paper technology into the US, UK and APAC region.
“The technology has enabled the healthcare sector to save time and money while improving quality and patient safety,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst S. Priyan. “It not only makes data capture easy and effective without compromising on the quality of the process, but it also increases the value of healthcare delivery by reducing the risk of error, improving productivity and ensuring noticeable cost savings.”
Digital Pen and Paper electronically captures and saves handwritten medical data such as patient information, prescriptions and so on. This saves a lot of time for healthcare staff who do not have to re-type in information onto their systems, while also helping reduce the number of errors that occur while the data is being entered into the systems.
“The digital pen helps healthcare staff eliminate multiple data-entry and lost charts,” adds Priyan. “The attached processing software automatically verifies that the data - including mandatory data such as physician’s signature and insurance details - is comprehensive enough for billing purposes.”
Existing Electronic Data Capture (EDC) techniques such as laptops, PDAs or Tablet PCs require a significant amount of training and practice that costs time and money. In contrast, digital pen and paper requires less than an hour of training and no significant practice. Field staff can undertake accurate, non-redundant transcription of data without having to carry laptops or PDAs during field visits. Captured data can be transferred instantly and validated and necessary action taken.
“Digital pen and paper technology is nearly four times less expensive than deploying laptops or tablet PCs,” remarks Priyan. “In addition to healthcare, Digital pen and paper simplifies administrative routines and documentation, thus assuring the quality of interventions in healthcare and clinical trials sectors.”
