LONDON - Homeowners desperately trying to save cash have driven a massive rise in broadband “bundling”, where internet access is combined with their phone service.

New figures from the leading independent broadband comparison site www.broadbandsuppliers.co.uk show broadband bundling has risen 28 per cent in the last 12 months.

Meantime some people have dumped traditional fixed line broadband altogether, in favour of mobile broadband.

Sales of mobile broadband are up 43 per cent in the last two months (August and September 2009), compared to the same period last year.

“People love fast internet access but hate paying for it,” said Nadeem Azam, marketing manager of www.broadbandsuppliers.co.uk.

“So they are doing whatever they can to keep the costs down. The recession has triggered a massive explosion in the kinds of bundling deals on offer, and they have proved very popular.

“Our advice is that some bundling deals can offer very good value, but you need to be careful how long you end up committed to one company. The longer you stay with a supplier for multiple services, the greater the chance you will find a better deal elsewhere… but of course you won’t be able to switch.

“We have also seen a massive rise in sales of mobile broadband, with plenty of evidence that some home owners are dumping their fixed line access.

“If you live on your own and use your laptop away from home, it can make better financial sense to get a dongle and use only mobile internet. In the last 12 months it has become cheap and fast enough that people have started to do that, and have dumped their fixed line broadband.”

www.broadbandsuppliers.co.uk is part of a independent network of 200 comparison and cashback sites with 750,000 members who buy from 2,000 mainstream retailers and businesses.

That means it is able to monitor and analyse UK internet spending habits and trends in a way no other business can.
