Funazaki and Flynn's Art@Ketchum Pleon Retrospective Exhibition Features Handbound Books Using Traditional and Modern Bookbinding Methods
LONDON, November 18, 2010 - As the age of eBooks ascends, Art@Ketchum Pleon proudly celebrates the
art of handmade book making and design in its exhibition of book works by Eri
Funazaki and printmaker, typographer Danny Flynn. Each book has been printed
by hand using individual metal type, a form of printing known as letterpress.
Some pages have also been embellished with blind and gold tooling. All of the
books were hand bound using 'design binding', a mix of traditional and modern
bookbinding methods. The alphabet prints in this exhibition are taken from
one of the books, '28 Characters', an 'A - X, Y & Z' of letterforms. New
letterpress and screen-printed work and a series of exquisite bronzes
depicting a little man struggling with his existence will also be on display
for public viewing today through 7 January 2011.
Eri Funazaki is an award-winning bookbinder and artist. Danny Flynn, who
returns to Art@Ketchum Pleon after his solo exhibition, is a professional
print maker and typographer. Funazaki and Flynn collaborate on book works
which combine the uniqueness of artists' books and the craft of fine binding.
This started with a series of drawings Funazaki began in 2000 for which Flynn
was asked to write text. Flynn says: "It is more an exercise in unlocking
each psychological narrative that Eri has already suggested pictorially."
Recently, Flynn donated his Art@Ketchum Pleon commissioned 'Kylie Minogue'
screen print to the 'Dentaid' auction held at the Saatchi Gallery.
The Art@Ketchum Pleon series is hosted by the London office of Ketchum
Pleon, a leading European public relations consultancy and part of global
public relations agency Ketchum. The programme offers local artists the
opportunity to show their work in an art gallery established in Ketchum
Pleon's London office, located at 35-41 Folgate Street. To date, Art@Ketchum
Pleon has showcased a number of famed British artists, including works by one
of the U.K.'s leading linocut artists Paul Catherall, as well Karin
Gunnarsson (photographer), John Lee Bird (artist), Gail Mallatratt (printer),
Andy Whale (photographer), Monica Curtin (photographer), Tom Frost
(illustrator) and Stephen Rothwell (artist).
"We are so pleased to host the creative talents of Eri Funazaki and Danny
Flynn," said David Gallagher, senior partner and president, Ketchum Pleon,
and CEO of Ketchum Pleon London. "These inspiring and intricate works provide
a great opportunity to foster creative thinking amongst Ketchum Pleon
employees, and open our doors to the larger London community to support these
talented local artists."
The Eri Funazaki & Danny Flynn Retrospective exhibition may be viewed
weekdays from 10.00am - 5.00pm from 18 November 2010 until 7 November 2011 at
Ketchum Pleon London, 35-41 Folgate Street, London, E1 6BX. A "meet the
artist" event is scheduled for 6-8pm on Thursday, 18 November.

About the Artists
Eri Funazaki is award winning artist and designer book-binder.
She studied graphic design at Joshibi University, Tokyo, Japan from 1989-92,
after which she worked as a graphic designer for Les Main Publications,
Japan. In 2000, she graduated with a BA in Book Arts and Crafts from the
London College of Printing. She was elected Licentiate member of Designer
Bookbinders in 2003, and Fellow in 2007. Today, Funazaki works as a
professional bookbinder for designer/forwarder and is an evening class tutor
at Shepherds Bookbinders, London. Collections of her work are housed in The
British Library, and in private and public collections in the U.K. and U.S.
Danny Flynn studied graphic design at Bradford and Hounslow
Borough College. He soon abandoned the design world in favour of binge
printing (ironically his work has won him a coveted D&AD Award). He lectured
in fine art at the London Metropolitan and at Hastings College of Art and
Design, and has researched laser-cutting techniques for letterpress printing
as well as teaching graphic design at Middlesex University.
