KIEV, Ukraine, October 29, 2010 - Local authority elections in Ukraine will be monitored by more
than two thousand international and national observers. The Prime Minister of
Ukraine assured that the Ukrainian government shall by all means encourage
foreign observers to supervise the course of the upcoming ballot vote.
According to the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, the
total number of the official international supervisors will be 490 people and
from the Ukrainian NGOs - 1913 people.
Mykola Azarov, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, stated recently
that the Ukrainian government would create all necessary conditions to
encourage international observers to scrupulously monitor the voting
procedure on the coming Sunday. "I have personally invited the
representatives of the European Union to supervise the Ukrainian elections so
they can be convinced of their legality and transparency." Azarov also said:
"The number of official observers is sufficient for the efficient supervision
of each region of Ukraine. This way we will be able to draw unbiased
conclusions about the quality of conduct of the elections."
As reported earlier, on 20 October 2010 a group of experts
from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of OSCE
initiated a study of the elections' procedure in Ukraine. According to the
press-office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the group of experts is
composed of 4 members and their major task is to analyze the electoral
legislation, to estimate the functioning of the authorities responsible for
the organization and holding of the elections and to provide media coverage
for the elections.
The local authority elections in Ukraine will be held on 31
October 2010. The results are expected to be announced before November 5,
2010.
