LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany - When the first non-stick cookware arrived on the market back in the mid-1950s, it was an instant hit. The images of fried eggs or pancakes sliding straight out of the pan onto the plate proved irresistible to consumers. As with so many other products, however, the discovery that made it all possible involved a series of lucky coincidences.
