First-class International Institute to be Launched in The Hague

THE HAGUE, The Netherlands, May 31, 2011 -
On June 10th 2011 the inauguration of The Hague Institute for Global
Justice will be held in the Ridderzaal in The Hague. The event will be
attended by dignitaries such as Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet,
Madeleine Albright and Joschka Fischer. The Hague Institute for Global
Justice is a new, first-class international institute and an independent
knowledge centre in the field of international justice, peace, security and
social and economic developments. The Institute aims to give concrete answers
to international issues regarding situations in which the absence of law and
justice causes political, military, social and economic instability and
inequality. The Institute will do this by combining the best international
academic knowledge from various disciplines and actors, geographic and
cultural perspectives.
The Institute is established by The Hague Academic Coalition (Carnegie
Foundation, Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael, ISS
Erasmus University, Leiden University Campus The Hague and Grotius Centre,
The Hague University of Applied Sciences and the TMC Asser Instituut), The
Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, The Hague Conference on Private
International Law and the Municipality of The Hague, with support from the
national government of The Netherlands.

13:00 Welcome by Jozias van Aartsen, Interim Chairman of The Hague
Institute for Global Justice Board of Governors and Mayor of The Hague
13:05 Speech by Maxime Verhagen, Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands
and Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation
13:20 Clarification of the content of the programme of The Hague
Institute for Global Justice by Prof Nico Schrijver, Interim Dean of the
Institute
13:30 Panel discussion with Madeleine Albright, Chair of The Hague
Institute for Global Justice Advisory Council and former US Secretary of
State, Louise Fresco, professor at the University of Amsterdam and former
Assistant Director-General of Agriculture at the UN Food and Agriculture
Organisation, Kamal Hossain, former Minister of Law and Foreign Affairs in
Bangladesh and former UN Special Rapporteur regarding the human rights
situation in Afghanistan.
14:15 Conclusion of the discussion and opportunity for interviews with
guests and representatives of The Hague Institute for Global Justice in the
Ridderzaal
Representatives of the media are welcome to attend the opening. After the
programme there will be an opportunity to speak with the initiators of the
institute and guests.
